The reality television show Love Island has attracted 186 complaints to the UK's broadcast regulator, Ofcom, within a single week, primarily concerning the behavior of male contestants towards female participants. The complaints, logged between June 16 and June 22, cited instances of alleged misogyny and uncomfortable interactions.

Specific attention was drawn to contestant Tommy's actions, with viewers describing his kiss with Namibia as 'forced.' Tommy, a builder from Newcastle, was noted for kissing multiple female contestants, Namibia and Ellie, in a single evening and attempting to kiss Priya. Many viewers expressed discomfort with the televised interactions.

Heart Rate Challenge Sparks Further Controversy

The show's popular Heart Rate challenge, where male contestants dressed in various costumes to perform for the female islanders, also generated significant viewer reactions and contributed to the complaint tally. During the challenge, Tommy, dressed as a waiter, performed a gesture with a shot glass for Jasmine, an act that was observed by Kavan, who later confronted Tommy about the interaction.

Discussions among contestants following the challenge revealed underlying tensions. Kavan expressed his frustration to Jasmine regarding Tommy's actions, stating, "Maybe I'm overreacting but I think it's a bit mad." Jasmine, in turn, appeared surprised by his reaction.

The episode also featured the elimination of vulnerable islanders based on public votes for favorite contestants. The results of the public vote led to some contestants facing the risk of being dumped from the island, with the show continuing to air on ITV and ITVX.

Love Island is produced by ITV. The network has been contacted for comment regarding the Ofcom complaints.
