The live stage recording of the Tony Award-winning musical "Hadestown" is now available for streaming on video-on-demand platforms, including Prime Video. The digital release occurred on August 25.
"Hadestown," which features music and lyrics by Anaïs Mitchell, first premiered on Broadway in 2019, following an extensive workshop period. The musical received the Tony Award for Best Musical in the same year. It intertwines the Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice with those of Hades and Persephone, exploring themes of poverty and endurance through its entirely sung-through narrative.
The filmed version, referred to as a "proshot," was recorded live on London's West End. It stars the original Broadway principal cast, reprising their roles: Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Eva Noblezada-Carney as Eurydice, Amber Gray as Persephone, Patrick Page as Hades, and Andre de Shields as Hermes.
For those looking to purchase the digital version, "Hadestown" is available on Prime Video for $24.99. A rental option is also offered at $19.99, providing 30 days to start watching and 48 hours of access once playback begins. An Amazon account is required to purchase or rent the film, though a Prime membership is not necessary.
A physical release of "Hadestown" on DVD and Blu-ray is scheduled for October 20, with preorders available on Amazon for release day delivery. This option provides a tangible copy of the musical.
