Lisa Kudrow, who ultimately earned an Emmy for her portrayal of Phoebe Buffay in the iconic sitcom Friends, has revealed that she initially hoped to play the role of Rachel Green.

During the audition process, Kudrow recalled telling her agents that she could bring a comedic element to a character she described as a "Jewish American Princess," an aspect she believed Rachel possessed. However, she did not realize at the time that Rachel was slated to be Ross Geller's romantic interest.

"Idiot that I am, I went, 'Oh, but you know what? I got to say, Rachel is Jewish. And boy, I love doing a Jewish American Princess. I think I could make that really funny,'" Kudrow shared, according to reports. "Not even clocking that, 'Oh no, this is the romantic lead to Ross'. Right? I told my agents, 'I can do Jewish American Princess and make that really funny.'"

Kudrow was later informed by the show's creators that they were having difficulty casting the role of Phoebe and did not want to "mess with that," which she interpreted as a polite way of indicating she was not suited to play the romantic lead.

At the time, Kudrow also admitted she did not fit the typical appearance of actresses cast as series regulars in sitcoms, and was once told by casting agents that she "wasn't gorgeous."

Despite not landing the role of Rachel, Kudrow went on to co-create, write, and star in the HBO comedy The Comeback. Her performance in that series garnered critical acclaim and multiple Emmy nominations.

Kudrow has previously spoken about feeling like an "afterthought" among her Friends co-stars, with some in her talent agency referring to her as "the sixth Friend." She observed that while her castmates secured significant film roles as the show's popularity grew, she felt there was "no vision" for her career beyond Friends.

The main cast of Friends famously negotiated their salaries collectively, which increased significantly over the show's run. They reunited for a special on HBO Max in 2021, reportedly earning millions each. Kudrow has also noted that the cast continues to receive substantial residual income from the show annually.

Reflecting on the series' enduring appeal, Kudrow mentioned re-watching Friends after the passing of Matthew Perry. She expressed a newfound appreciation for the show's quality, attributing its success to the "genius at work" and stating that such an experience would likely never be replicated.
