Lily Tomlin was seen visiting a fitness studio in Los Angeles on Tuesday, appearing downcast on her 87th birthday. The outing occurred just one week after the death of her longtime friend and "9 To 5" co-star, Dolly Parton.
Tomlin, dressed in an all-white ensemble with matching Converse sneakers, presented a somber figure as she marked her birthday. Her somber mood follows the passing of Parton, whom Tomlin first met in the 1970s.
The pair, along with Jane Fonda, starred in the iconic 1980 workplace comedy "9 To 5." The film depicted their roles as three female employees who fantasize about and enact revenge on their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot boss.
Fonda, 88, expressed being "devastated" by Parton's death. Tomlin stated she was left "with no words" following the news.
Parton had frequently voiced her desire for a "9 To 5" reunion with Tomlin and Fonda. The trio did reunite a few years prior for the documentary "Still Working 9 to 5," and also appeared together at the Emmy Awards in 2017 to present an award. During that appearance, they quipped about their "9 To 5" roles, with Fonda saying in 2017, "we refused to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot," a sentiment Tomlin echoed.
Tomlin is married to writer and producer Jane Wagner. Parton died last Tuesday at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Centre in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by loved ones, according to her representative. She had been privately battling cancer and had canceled her Las Vegas residency in May due to digestive and immune system issues.
The friendship between Tomlin and Parton spanned decades after "9 To 5" became a cult classic. Producers Larry and Gary Lane told Extra that the "magic" from their initial collaboration remained, and their "friendship has spanned the rest of their lives."
