Lily Allen Responds to David Harbour's 'Weird' Comments on Break-Up Album

Lily Allen has addressed her ex-husband David Harbour's recent comments about her album "West End Girl," which chronicles the breakdown of their marriage. Harbour, known for his role in "Stranger Things," had described the album as "weird" and stated that it did not reflect "his experience."

In a recent interview with The Cut, Allen responded to Harbour's statements, calling his opinion "generous." She also complimented his acting career, noting his recent Emmy nomination. "If there's one thing I know about David Harbour, it's that he's an excellent actor," Allen remarked.

Harbour's comments were made in an interview with Variety in June. He acknowledged Allen's artistic right to use personal experiences for her music but maintained a distinction from his own perspective on their relationship. "It was weird," Harbour told Variety. "I do believe that it is the privilege of every artist to use their experience to create art, and so I respect her for doing that. I can't really say that much more, because it's my private life."

He emphasized the value he places on privacy, stating, "And I also value the lives of the people that I interact with privately. I just won't speak about that. Stories are complex, and that's why I say I respect her creation of art to channel her experience. It wasn't my experience."

Allen's response, particularly her concluding remark about Harbour being an "excellent actor," was interpreted by some fans on social media as carrying a subtle, or not-so-subtle, barb. Comments ranged from "Oop the shade-" to observations that the compliment felt like a pointed jab after the album's content.

"West End Girl," released earlier this year, features lyrics that delve into themes of extramarital affairs and emotional manipulation. The album, which Allen stated was written in ten days, is described as a blend of fact and fiction, and she has cautioned listeners against taking the lyrics as literal truth. Songs like "Madeline" appear to accuse Harbour of a prolonged affair, while "Tennis" uses a metaphor to explore infidelity and jealousy.

Allen and Harbour met on the dating app Raya and married in Las Vegas in 2020. They legally separated in early 2025, with divorce proceedings following. "West End Girl" explores the emotional aftermath of their split. Prior to her marriage to Harbour, Allen was married to Sam Cooper from 2011 to 2018.

Coincidentally, the day after Allen's interview was published, David Harbour received an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role in HBO's "DTF St. Louis."
