Lewis Capaldi became emotional during his performance at BST Hyde Park on Saturday, sharing with the audience that he wasn't sure if performing again would be possible following his Tourette's diagnosis.
The 29-year-old Scottish singer, who is undertaking two headline performances at the festival, took time to compose himself on stage as he reflected on his journey over the past few years. "I didn't know if this would be possible again so to be here it's really special for me!" he told the crowd.
Capaldi took a hiatus from performing to focus on his mental health and to "adjust to the impact" of his Tourette's diagnosis. This break followed an emotional set at Glastonbury festival in 2023, after which he announced he would be "taking a break for the foreseeable future." He had previously stated that the decision was "the most difficult" of his life.
During his Glastonbury performance, the singer had openly discussed his struggles with Tourette's, a neurological condition characterized by involuntary noises and movements known as tics. He admitted to being "s**t scared" to perform and that his voice had been affected, leading to his supportive fans singing his hit "Someone You Loved" in unison. Afterward, he announced his intention to prioritize his mental and physical health.
A documentary titled "How I'm Feeling Now" aired in April 2023, detailing his struggles with the condition. Capaldi's first album, "Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent," was released in 2019, followed by "Broken by Desire to be Heavenly Sent" in 2023, which debuted at number one.
Earlier in his BST Hyde Park set, Capaldi had humorously urged fans to stay until the end, fearing they might leave to watch England's World Cup quarter-final match. He lightheartedly addressed the potential conflict between his performance and the game, noting his Scottish heritage and the audience's likely English majority. "Can't we all live in peace and harmony? It's coming home," he joked. He expressed appreciation for the fans' presence, even if some opted to go to the pub early.
In other recent events, Capaldi reportedly spent nearly £2,000 on drinks for England fans at a Mayfair pub after their victory over Mexico. He was seen celebrating with Rita Ora, and a pubgoer described the gesture as a "massive treat and a real lovely gesture."
