Lena Dunham and Luis Felber Welcome First Child
The couple announced the birth of their daughter via surrogate in September 2026, marking a new chapter in their relationship timeline.
Lena Dunham and her husband, Luis Felber, have welcomed their first child, a baby girl, born via surrogate in September 2026. The actress and the British musician married in 2021.
Dunham announced the birth in a September 16, 2026, op-ed in Vogue, sharing details about the embryo transfer in November and her relationship with the surrogate. "The feelings I thought would be there somehow weren’t: namely jealousy, that this woman could do for a child—for my child—what I could not," Dunham wrote. "Instead, I felt a different kind of jealousy—toward said baby, for the chance to be tucked into someone who radiated such safety."
Her daughter arrived nearly two weeks past her due date. Dunham described her first words to her newborn as, "Hello. I’m your mama. You look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come."
A Look Back at Their Relationship
The couple's relationship began with a chance encounter. In 2009, at the premiere of Dunham's first film at SXSW, she noticed a group of British men, one of whom she described as "wearing a French military coat, his black hair wild, drunkenly leading the others down the street." In a 2024 Instagram post, she speculated that this man was Felber. "He smiled – at me, or in my general direction?" she wrote. "I never forgot it."
Years later, in 2021, the two officially met on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend. Felber recalled to The New York Times that they talked for approximately eight hours and the relationship progressed quickly. "When you find your soul mate, you just know," Felber said.
The couple confirmed their relationship on Instagram on June 9, 2021, two days after Page Six exclusively reported on their romance. Dunham posted a birthday tribute to Felber, writing, "When I was 3 weeks old in downtown Manhattan, I had no idea a baby was being born in England (Winchester, no less!) who would rocket into my life — wearing a lime green polar fleece snood — and challenge so many of my beliefs about myself and the world with magical abandon."
Dunham and Felber made their red carpet debut in August 2021 at the Sundance Film Festival in London. They tied the knot on September 25, 2021, in an intimate ceremony at Union Club in London's Soho. The wedding was attended by approximately 60 guests, with Taylor Swift serving as guest of honor and delivering a speech.
Dunham later revealed that they had been engaged for only one month before the wedding, describing it as an "impromptu" event. She wore three custom dresses by Christopher Kane, while Felber donned a custom blue suede suit by Emily Bode.
Family Planning and Parenthood
In June 2025, Dunham shared with The Times that she and Felber were planning to expand their family. This followed her 2017 hysterectomy due to severe endometriosis, a medical history she had discussed openly. "I want to safely meet our children and then figure out how to talk about it," she stated at the time.
Dunham has spoken about the grief she experienced over the possibility of not becoming a mother due to her health conditions. She expressed that while she had always dreamed of motherhood, her hysterectomy presented a different path. The couple's journey into parenthood via surrogacy signifies a significant milestone in their relationship.
