BBC broadcaster Lauren Laverne has announced she has been diagnosed with smoldering myeloma, a rare blood and bone marrow disorder. Laverne, 48, shared the personal news on Instagram less than two years after receiving an all-clear from a previous cancer diagnosis.
Smoldering myeloma is an asymptomatic condition that, in some individuals, can progress to blood cancer. Laverne stated that the risk of this progression in her case is low and that she currently feels well and does not require treatment. She noted that many people with this condition are unaware they have it and that cancer survivors, like herself, are often diagnosed early due to close monitoring.
Laverne explained that the new diagnosis is unrelated to her previous illness or recent surgery, describing it as "just one of those things." She clarified that it is a chronic condition with no current cure, and it means her immune system is somewhat compromised, requiring her to take good care of herself. She anticipates ongoing monitoring through blood tests, MRIs, and bone marrow biopsies.
"It's been a lot, especially coming less than two years after my last diagnosis," Laverne wrote, acknowledging the challenges but finding solace in public figures sharing similar health journeys. She expressed gratitude for the support of her family, friends, the BBC Radio 6 Music team, her doctors, and her therapist.
She specifically highlighted the role of her general practitioner, crediting the doctor with catching this second major health issue early. Laverne urged others to advocate for themselves and seek specialist consultation if they experience persistent low iron levels or similar symptoms. She is taking a short holiday and plans to return to work afterwards.
Laverne previously disclosed her cancer diagnosis in August 2024, announcing her remission in November 2024. She has also spoken about her struggles with health anxiety, partly stemming from the loss of her mother to cancer in 2022.
Her announcement was met with supportive messages from fellow celebrities, including Kate Garraway and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who commended her for speaking openly about her health. Laverne is married to television producer Graeme Fisher, and they have two sons, Fergus, 17, and Mack, 14.
