Laura Mercier, the world-famous makeup artist and founder of her eponymous brand, has revealed her approach to aging gracefully, emphasizing a philosophy rooted in natural beauty and self-acceptance. At 65, Mercier attributes her look to a simple, consistent routine and a mindset that prioritizes feeling good over adhering to complex beauty standards.
Mercier's beauty philosophy, which she describes as typically French, centers on achieving a healthy, fresh appearance with a "no make-up" make-up look that allows the skin's natural features to show. She credits her upbringing in Provence for fostering an appreciation for natural beauty, which she later combined with the discipline and technique learned at the Carita Paris Institute. Her brand, launched in the U.S. 30 years ago, initially challenged the prevailing preference for full-coverage foundation, advocating instead for a more pared-back aesthetic that has since become widely adopted.
"Make-up is very psychological," Mercier noted, explaining that women should embrace what makes them feel comfortable. While a red lip is her signature for the confidence it provides, she believes it's not for everyone.
Mercier's routine is built on simplicity, advocating for minimal products. She relies on her Secret Camouflage Complexion Perfector for targeted coverage of imperfections, a Tinted Moisturiser for sheer coverage, and occasionally mixes foundation with face cream for a lighter finish. Essential additions include Caviar Tightline Eyeliner for definition and an Eye Brow Pencil to accentuate brows, with mascara used when time permits. She advises making only subtle adjustments as one ages, such as adding slightly more coverage to uneven skin, but cautions against over-powdering or using too much dark color, which can be aging. Lightening up tones slightly is key, she suggests, and using a brow pencil to enhance thinning brows is also recommended.
Skincare, in Mercier's view, should also be uncomplicated. As a trained aesthetician, she performs professional facials but stresses consistency over multi-step routines. Cleansing thoroughly each night is paramount. She advocates for using age-appropriate skincare, a good multi-tasking day cream with SPF, and a serum and night cream in the evening, emphasizing the importance of application technique, including massaging the products into the skin to promote a refreshed appearance.
Beyond beauty, Mercier also shared insights into her lifestyle. She exercises at her own pace, walking and swimming, and avoids over-exertion. Her diet focuses on a balanced, healthy approach, with a preference for eggs or wholegrain toast for breakfast, vegetables for lunch, and avoiding large dinners. She has also embraced a shorter, more manageable hairstyle and finds comfort in a signature fragrance, particularly amber notes.
Mercier advises against being a slave to fashion, preferring timeless pieces with good cuts and neutral tones that allow for movement and comfort. She also incorporates signature accessories like cashmere scarves and jewelry.
Ultimately, Mercier's philosophy encourages acceptance of the natural aging process. While acknowledging the physical changes that come with age, she chooses not to pursue cosmetic procedures, believing in the importance of accepting oneself and one's life experiences. "Be proud of who you are, be individual, express yourself. That’s where the real beauty lies," she stated.
