Laura Hamilton, host of 'A Place In The Sun', has spoken out about the mum-shaming she experienced after returning to work just three weeks after giving birth to each of her children. Hamilton, 44, is mother to son Rocco, 12, and daughter Tahlia, 11, with ex-husband Alex Goward.
In an interview on the HELLO! Second Act podcast with Ateh Jewel, Hamilton detailed the strong reactions she encountered, even from midwives, when she immediately sought a passport for her newborn son. She explained that her young children often traveled with her for work until they began school. This decision led to online criticism, with some social media users suggesting she should spend more time with her children.
Hamilton emphasized the importance of not judging others for their parenting choices, stating, "We should never be judged for the choices that we make. We just do what we think is right for us." She also highlighted her need to maintain her identity outside of motherhood, saying, "I might be Rocco and Tahlia’s mum, but I'm still Laura. I was somebody before I had them, and I didn't want to lose that."
The scrutiny faced during her marriage to Alex Goward, from whom she separated in January 2022 after 13 years, prompted Hamilton to decide to keep future relationships private. She confirmed she is currently seeing someone but is being mindful and respectful of their privacy.
Reflecting on her divorce, Hamilton views it as a transition rather than an ending, stating, "After I got divorced I don't say 'that chapter is closed' I just say, well, that's that chapter. And actually we're moving forward to the next part of my story."
She has also addressed criticism regarding her co-parenting arrangements, refuting claims that it is "sad for the children." Hamilton believes that children benefit from spending time with both parents, especially when both parents are happier. She stated, "Why is it sad for children? Actually, it is brilliant for the child that they get to spend time with both parents – and that both parents are happier!"
Hamilton also noted that she could not envision giving up her career, despite the challenges of balancing motherhood and travel. She expressed respect for full-time mothers but stated she personally could not fulfill that role. She has found a way to manage her career and motherhood, often scheduling her filming around her children's time with their father.
She credited her employer for providing the flexibility to travel with her children when possible, considering herself "incredibly lucky" to have such support.
