Kunal Nayyar, known for his role as Rajesh Koothrappali in the long-running sitcom "The Big Bang Theory," made a surprise appearance in the new HBO Max spinoff "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe." Nayyar's return featured a significantly different appearance, with the actor sporting rugged, long hair and a bushy, unkempt beard, portraying an alternate-universe version of his character.

"Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" premiered on HBO Max, centering on comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) as he inadvertently triggers a multiverse apocalypse. To restore reality, Stuart embarks on a journey through alternate dimensions with his companions, including his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus) and geologist Bert Kibbler (Brian Posehn).

The narrative leads them to a post-apocalyptic Caltech, where they encounter an alternate version of Raj. This version of the character, depicted as having spent years in captivity, appears drastically changed from his appearance in "The Big Bang Theory." Despite his altered look, Nayyar's portrayal retains the charm, wit, and sarcasm that characterized Raj in the original series, albeit with a touch of paranoia.

"The Big Bang Theory," which concluded in 2019 after 12 seasons, followed the lives of physicists Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and their neighbor Penny (Kaley Cuoco), alongside their friends Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz (Melissa Rauch), and Raj.

The new spinoff is expected to feature additional surprise appearances and alternate universe versions of other "Big Bang Theory" characters. Actress Lauren Lapkus, who plays Denise, commented to People that the new series offers a different vibe but believes the humor will resonate with fans of the original. She also noted that Nayyar's cameo is a standout moment, highlighting its humor and distinctiveness from the original show.

This alternate-universe version of Raj also had a paranoid personality due to his years of captivity at Caltrans

Nayyar previously expressed enthusiasm for the continuation of "The Big Bang Theory" franchise, sharing his affection for his former castmates and the new team involved in the spinoff.
