Kjell Nilsson, the Swedish actor renowned for his portrayal of the formidable Lord Humungus in the 1981 cult classic Mad Max 2 (also known as Mad Max: The Road Warrior), has died at the age of 76. His passing occurred on July 2 in Queensland, Australia, following a lengthy and challenging health battle.
According to a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Nilsson had been living with end-stage kidney disease for the past four and a half years, requiring dialysis three times a week. The statement described his struggle as a "long and painful journey" that included the gradual loss of bodily autonomy. In his final days, Nilsson made the decision to cease dialysis, seeking to regain control over his pain.
Nilsson spent his last days surrounded by loved ones in a state of peace and acceptance. The Facebook post noted his remarkable resilience, recalling how medical professionals in 2022 had predicted he would not survive his first Christmas after kidney failure. He ultimately lived for four more years, celebrating four additional Christmases with his family.
Nilsson achieved international recognition for his role as the masked gang leader in Mad Max 2. His acting career also included appearances in The Pirate Movie (1982), the television film Man of Letters (1984), and The Edge of Power. Before his film career, Nilsson was a competitive weightlifter who moved to Australia in 1980 in preparation for the Moscow Olympics.
His representative, Chris Carbaugh, described Nilsson as a "wonderful person" who inspired many as a weight-training coach. Carbaugh also noted the actor's deep appreciation for the Mad Max fan community and his embrace of the iconic role that brought him fame.
Fans have shared numerous tributes on social media, remembering Nilsson as an unforgettable screen villain. Many celebrated his "colourful life on his own terms" and his "unwavering conviction, an adventurous heart, and a spirit that refused to surrender."
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
