Kirstie Allsopp became emotional on Wednesday's episode of Location, Location, Location after first-time buyers secured an end-of-terrace home in south Bristol for £275,000, inside their £280,000 budget.
Allsopp and co-presenter Phil Spencer were in the West Country for the series opener, helping 24-year-olds Jesse and Cameron, who had been saving for a deposit while living with their parents. The three-bedroom property in Hartcliffe offered a private garden, a modern kitchen, a separate dining area and an out-house that the couple said could be used as a games room or bar.
The couple had previously missed a viewing when an estate agent brought the wrong key and the house was snapped up the next day; that earlier sale later fell through. When the property reappeared on the market the presenters arranged another viewing, and Allsopp — who told the pair "I'm not leaving this house. Nobody else is coming in" — remained until they lodged an offer.
Their bid of £275,000 was accepted at the end of the episode. Camera footage showed Allsopp appearing moved as Jesse and Cameron burst into tears; she told them, "If there was anything ever that was meant to be — it was this." Jesse, an accounts manager, said he had been distraught when they first lost the chance to view the house and added, "We are completely in love with this property."
Viewers responded on social media to the episode's focus on modest budgets, noting that properties in other editions of the long-running series often fetch much higher sums. "Nice to see an episode where people have ‘normal’ budgets!" one commenter wrote, while others praised the locales and the programme's depiction of attainable family homes.
Elsewhere in the episode Phil Spencer showed amateur basketballer Andrea around Bath as she hunted for a period property with a £400,000 budget. Andrea secured a Grade II-listed Georgian flat split over upper and lower ground floors, which Spencer noted had a "secret vault" space that could be converted into a home office. The flat also included a rare central Bath private garden and was purchased on budget for £400,000.
Channel 4 marked the new season by also airing a compilation titled Kirstie & Phil: Bleeps, Bloops & Best Bits in which the pair revisited memorable on-screen moments. In the 20-minute special Spencer joked that their partnership had outlasted many marriages "probably because we've never slept together," a line that prompted Allsopp to confirm the presenters had never been romantically involved, describing their relationship as a long friendship.
Location, Location, Location first aired in 2000. Over its run, Allsopp and Spencer have said they have carried out hundreds of searches and viewed more than 1,800 homes, with the programme noting it has handled more than £176 million of buyers' money. The new season is currently airing on Channel 4.
