Kevin Keegan's iconic shirt from the 1977 European Super Cup match against Liverpool has sold at auction for £84,500. The shirt, a sky-blue and white Adidas No7 jersey, was part of the collection of Keegan's former Liverpool teammate Emlyn Hughes.

The 1977 European Super Cup saw Keegan play against his former club Liverpool for the first time after transferring to Hamburg. Liverpool won the tie, defeating Hamburg 6-0 in the second leg after a 1-1 draw in the first.

BUDDS auctioneers had estimated the shirt's value at between £2,000 and £3,000. The sale occurred months after Keegan's death, which prompted widespread tributes to the celebrated footballer.

Keegan began his career at Scunthorpe United before joining Liverpool, where he won seven major trophies in six years, including three league titles and a European Cup. He then moved to Hamburg in 1977, where he spent three years and earned the nickname 'Mighty Mouse.' During his time in Germany, he won the league title in 1979 and reached the 1980 European Cup final. His individual accolades include winning the Ballon d'Or in 1978 and 1979.

He later played for Southampton and Newcastle United before embarking on a managerial career that included spells at Newcastle, Manchester City, and a tenure as England manager. His time at Newcastle United, particularly their 1984 promotion-winning campaign, fostered a deep connection with the club's supporters, who referred to him as 'The Messiah.' Following his death, fans created a large floral tribute outside St James' Park.
