Broadcaster Kaye Adams has revealed she recently had her thyroid removed after discovering a lump that raised fears of cancer. Adams, 63, shared her experience on the latest episode of her podcast, "How To Be 60," which she co-hosts with Karen MacKenzie.

Adams explained that about 18 months ago, she felt a lump in her neck and was advised by a nurse friend to get it checked. Initial tests, including a biopsy, were inconclusive, leading to a period of anxiety. "They took a biopsy and said they didn't know what was in there and I said 'just leave it' because I couldn't face it," she recalled.

"This has been hanging over me for more than a year," Adams stated on the podcast, referencing the prolonged uncertainty. She described a year of regular scans and check-ups while waiting for a definitive diagnosis. "I was constantly looking up thyroid cancer," she admitted. "They kept tabs on me and I went for a scan again this year and they said I would be better to get this out."

Doctors were unable to determine if the growth was malignant or benign, describing it as "indeterminate." The decision was made to surgically remove a portion of her thyroid, a procedure known as a demi-thyroidectomy.

Adams shared the emotional experience of awaiting the final results, which took three weeks to receive after the surgery. She admitted to initially not answering the phone when the hospital called, fearing the worst. "The news was good and 'it was all benign,'" she said, describing her immense relief. "I was jumping up and down like a kid at Christmas who’d just got given six ponies and a bike. What a relief."

She also spoke about the psychological toll of the scare, especially after what she described as a "hellish year." Adams shared that she had lost her appetite and had become accustomed to expecting bad news with every phone call. The cancer scare followed a period of personal difficulty, including being axed from her BBC Radio show after misconduct complaints were upheld.

In March, Adams had sparked concern among followers when she posted a picture of her neck wrapped in a bandage. At the time, she was discussing the "brutal five months" she had endured since her suspension from the radio show in October. She described being torn between acknowledging the situation and needing time to process events and regain her mental health and well-being.

Adams continues to be a regular presenter on ITV's "Loose Women."
