Kate O'Flynn has been awarded the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Patricia in the Apple TV+ comedy series "Widow's Bay" at the 78th annual Emmy Awards ceremony held in Los Angeles.
The recognition marks a significant achievement for the British star, who has cultivated a respected career over two decades while maintaining a private life. O'Flynn, 40, was born in Bury, Greater Manchester, and was inspired by her mother's involvement in amateur dramatics. She trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, where she was a peer of Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
O'Flynn's early career included a role in Mike Leigh's 2008 film "Happy-Go-Lucky." Her performance in "The Children's Hour" with the Royal Exchange Theatre Company later that year earned her the 2008 TMA Theatre Award for Best Supporting Performance in a Play, with The Guardian noting her as "the one to watch."
Her extensive resume spans theatre, television, and film. She has appeared in productions such as the comedy-drama "Kingdom" with Stephen Fry, the National Theatre's "Port" (for which she received a Critics' Circle's Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer), and "A Taste of Honey." She also played co-lead Fiona Lewis in Channel 4's "Everyone Else Burns," appeared alongside Olivia Colman and David Thewlis in "Landscapers," and portrayed DC Dinah Kowalska in Paul Abbott's "No Offence."
Despite her rising profile, O'Flynn has expressed concern about being typecast as "tough but damaged northern people." She shared that roles in "The Trial," where she played six different characters, helped alleviate this worry.
"Widow's Bay," a horror-comedy series, follows a mayor attempting to revitalize a struggling island town, which inadvertently awakens a local curse. The show itself had a highly successful night, entering the ceremony with 19 nominations and securing a record-breaking 14 wins, including O'Flynn's.
During her acceptance speech, O'Flynn thanked her family, including her husband and daughter, calling the role "the role of a lifetime." She leads the British winners at the event, alongside co-star Matthew Rhys. O'Flynn was nominated against other actresses including Hannah Einbinder and Michelle Pfeiffer.
O'Flynn maintains a deeply private personal life, eschewing public social media accounts. She grew up in Bury and still visits Lancashire regularly, describing a craving for its open spaces and friendly faces.
She also maintains a close friendship with actor Jonathan Bailey, whom she met at RADA and starred with in the 2009 stage play "The House of Special Purpose."
The series creator, Katie Dippold, has confirmed that the writers' room for "Widow's Bay" Season 2 is already in development.
