Karl Stefanovic's tenure at Channel Nine has concluded following the fallout from a controversial interview with Tommy Robinson. The departure was officially announced on Friday, leading to expressions of dismay from Australian fans abroad, captured in a viral video.
In the video, a group of Australian football fans gathered in a California pub ahead of the Socceroos' World Cup match against Paraguay voiced their support for Stefanovic. Chants of "We want our Karl back!" were recorded at San Pedro Square Market as Nine's Washington correspondent Lauren Tomasi broadcast live. While some onlookers laughed, others expressed genuine support for the embattled host.
Tomasi, reporting from the fan hub, described a significant turnout for the Socceroos, noting the pub was full ahead of the crucial match. She also commented on the atmosphere, remarking that the crowd was becoming "very, very well hydrated" in the California heat and that the noise level required her to step outside for her later broadcast. Australian supporters were described as being "everywhere you look."
The decision for Stefanovic to leave Nine was announced by his Today co-host Sarah Abo, who became emotional during the live broadcast. "Look, we know there has been a lot of speculation about Karl's future with the show. Today we wanted to inform you that Karl will not be returning to the Today show or to Nine," Abo stated.
Fill-in host Tom Steinfort explained that Stefanovic's independent podcast project, The Karl Stefanovic Show, was the reason for the immediate departure, stating it was "no longer possible" to continue with both. "As you know, he's been pursuing a podcast project independently of Nine for the past few months, and it's been decided he'll be injecting all of his energy and attention into that, as doing both is no longer possible," Steinfort said.
Channel Nine confirmed the mutual agreement for Stefanovic's immediate departure. "Nine Entertainment and Karl Stefanovic have agreed that it is no longer possible for him to continue hosting Today at the same time as his independent podcast," the network said in a statement. "While Karl and Nine had previously agreed he would leave Today at the end of this year, they have subsequently decided he will leave the Network immediately."
Stefanovic, who was on leave in London, addressed his fans via video, stating that the preceding days had been difficult but expressing happiness at being "truly independent." His exit follows late-night discussions with the network concerning a controversial interview with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson, which Stefanovic had uploaded to his podcast channel on Tuesday before deleting it hours later after facing backlash.
Stefanovic, a long-time figure at Channel Nine for approximately 25 years, has six months remaining on his 12-month contract, with reports suggesting he is seeking a full payout of the remaining amount. The circumstances of his departure differ significantly from those of former Nine radio hosts Alan Jones and Ray Hadley, who also secured lucrative exits from the network.
