Karen Gillan said she is "sentimental" about a handmade wedding book created by her closest friends, even after she previously described the run-up to her ceremony as a "s***show."
In an interview with the Scottish Mail on Sunday published Sept. 6, 2025, the 37-year-old actress said the book, which contains memories and photos from her May 2022 wedding, is something she particularly treasures in her U.S. home. "A wedding book that all my closest girlfriends made for me, filled with our memories," Gillan told the paper.
Gillan married American actor Nick Kocher, 39, at Castle Toward near Dunoon in Argyll in May 2022. The ceremony drew a number of high-profile guests; the Daily Mail reported that Hollywood actors Robert Downey Jr. and Julia Roberts were among those in attendance, with Roberts reportedly seen having breakfast in the venue's cafe and Downey Jr. browsing the castle gift shop.
The actress has publicly recounted hiccups in the run-up to the event, previously calling preparations a "s***show" and comparing aspects of the venue to the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. In the recent interview, however, Gillan said those difficulties did not diminish the importance of the day or the value of the keepsakes produced by friends and family.
Castles and large weddings in Scotland have become notable for hosting celebrity ceremonies in recent years, and Gillan's choice of Castle Toward highlighted the draw of historic venues for public figures. Gillan, who is from Scotland and has worked in both British and American film and television, has spoken in past interviews about balancing a public career with private life milestones.
The wedding book joins other personal mementos the actress keeps from the event. Gillan's remarks follow media coverage of the wedding when it took place in 2022 and subsequent reporting about the guest list and scenes at the venue. She has continued to discuss aspects of her personal life in interviews while promoting her acting work.
The Scottish Mail on Sunday conducted the interview published Sept. 6, 2025, and the Daily Mail provided contemporaneous coverage of the wedding and attendees in 2022.
