Kaia Gerber, daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford, attended the US Open in New York on Tuesday, drawing attention in a black, figure-hugging pencil dress paired with black peep-toe heels and a tiger-print shoulder bag. The 24-year-old fashionista was accompanied by her co-star in the upcoming series "The Shards," Homer Gere, 26, son of actor Richard Gere.
Gerber and Gere watched former Swiss tennis player Roger Federer during the "Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York" exhibition match as part of the US Open Fan Week at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Gerber, who is 24, and Gere, who is 26, previously met two weeks before filming began on "The Shards," with Gere noting that they immediately addressed the familial connection.
"It's really funny, the odds are funny," Gere told USA Today. "We had never met, actually, before shooting. We met two weeks before at a bar, with all the cast and it was our first kind of like, let's meet each other, and she was lovely." He added that Gerber is "a lovely actress" and they have become "really close."
Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere were a prominent couple in the early 1990s, marrying in Las Vegas and divorcing four years later. Following their separation, they maintained little contact, with Crawford reportedly describing Gere as "like a stranger" to her. Their children's collaboration on "The Shards" has brought them into each other's orbit.
The series, developed by Ryan Murphy, is based on Bret Easton Ellis's novel of the same name. The story is set in 1980s Los Angeles and follows a group of privileged high school students targeted by a serial killer. The novel itself is a fictionalized account of Ellis's adolescence, with many characters inspired by real individuals. The show's logline describes the plot as revolving around an observant teenager whose reality unravels with the arrival of a new student, coinciding with the terror of "The Trawler," a serial killer preying on teenagers. Gerber portrays Susan Reynolds, while Gere plays the new student, Robert Mallory.
"The Shards" explores themes of wealth, beauty, and excess among the young characters, contrasted with the "dark and cynical world of the adults surrounding them," including characters played by Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jordan Roth.
