Kaia Gerber, daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford, and Homer Gere, son of actor Richard Gere, are addressing the ongoing discussion surrounding "nepo babies" in Hollywood. Both acknowledged the public scrutiny that comes with having famous parents as they step into the spotlight together for Ryan Murphy's FX series, "The Shards."

In an interview with Vogue's September 2026 cover story, Gerber, 24, stated that she fully embraces her "nepo baby" status, acknowledging that she has always benefited from it. However, she also admitted to being critical of other celebrity children, questioning whether they have truly earned their opportunities.

"Show me why you deserve this job," Gerber told Vogue, reflecting on the skepticism she believes audiences may have toward individuals with famous familial connections in the entertainment industry. She shared that she warned Gere, 26, that his career would be subject to a different level of judgment than that of an unknown actor.

Gerber, who began modeling as a child and has since transitioned into acting, suggested that this heightened scrutiny has motivated her to work harder. Gere, on the other hand, took a different path. Despite his father's fame, he was largely raised outside of Los Angeles and had not previously worked on a professional film set until recently. He initially pursued visual arts at Brown University before becoming involved in student filmmaking.

His acting career began after a talent manager discovered one of his student films. Gere later auditioned for and secured roles in both "The Shards" and HBO's "Euphoria." He recognized that his family name inevitably influences perceptions of his success, admitting he is self-critical and wishes his career success were solely due to his own merit, though he finds that increasingly difficult to believe.

The casting of Gerber and Gere carries a particular Hollywood connection: Gerber's mother, Cindy Crawford, and Gere's father, Richard Gere, were married from 1991 to 1995. They notably appeared together on the cover of Vogue in 1992. Now, more than three decades later, their children are sharing the September cover of the same magazine while starring opposite each other in "The Shards." For Gerber, navigating comparisons to her famous mother and the assumptions about her career trajectory may be unavoidable, but she appears intent on letting her work speak for itself.
