Julia Roberts says she was scared to meet Chloë Sevigny when the two first crossed paths while preparing for their film After the Hunt, according to a Variety interview published Thursday. The admission underscores the long-running curiosity about how two acclaimed actors from different generations found common ground on a project led by Luca Guadagnino.

Roberts recalled sitting at her kitchen table with producer Allan Mandelbaum, director Luca Guadagnino, and co-star Ayo Edebiri to discuss the material and rehearsing. Also in the room was Roberts’ 20-year-old daughter Hazel, who was making herself some lunch. Allan, our producer, he came in, and he goes, "Chloë should just be here in a couple minutes." And I look up, and Ayo looks up, and we match eyes, Roberts said. When Guadagnino asked what was wrong, Roberts admitted, "I’m scared" — prompting Sevigny to agree, "Me too."

Roberts said she was so excited and intimidated about meeting Chloë. The headcount of people in the room that day foreshadowed a collaborative energy that would mark their on-screen pairing. Sevigny, for her part, had no problem bonding with Roberts from the jump. "I mean, I felt close to her the first time I met her," Sevigny said. "But she invited us to her home for rehearsals, and we stayed in her beach house. And she was just very giving and generous."

Roberts said she and the group were "so excited and intimidated" for Sevigny to arrive. Sevigny immediately hit it off with Roberts. The Big Love actress, 50, raved about her time filming with Roberts and said she was sad to part ways when the project wrapped. "Can I say when we left, I needed more Julia. On the plane ride home, I watched, like, three of your movies. I just wanted more Julia!" she said. “Notting Hill,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” and I can’t remember the third. But I was like, ‘I just want more Julia!'” Roberts replied with tears in her eyes that she was "so glad" their conversation was being recorded for the interview. "I mean, I felt close to her the first time I met her," she said of Roberts.

Sevigny doubled down, adding that she was "not ready to say goodbye" when their work together was done. "Luckily, there’s a whole canon I can go home and keep watching," she added of Roberts’ filmography. Their movie is scheduled to hit US theaters Oct. 10.
