Julia Morris has spoken about the difficulties she faced during her marriage to ex-husband Dan Thomas, detailing how her self-confidence diminished over time before their eventual separation.
Appearing on the Life Uncut podcast, Morris, 58, discussed behaviors she initially dismissed as quirks but which later took on greater significance. She suggested that societal conditioning often leads women to prioritize others' needs, making it easier to overlook troubling relationship dynamics.
Morris recalled an early instance where her former husband stated he "didn't believe in compliments." This remark became a recurring element she would use humorously, recounting how she would playfully compliment herself when ready to leave the house.
The comedian acknowledged that marriage presents inherent challenges, particularly after the arrival of children. "Everything's new once kids are in the mix," she said, describing the period as a "sink or swim" situation. She explained that the constant demands of family life made it difficult to identify deeper relationship issues at the time.
Morris, who has previously spoken about her ADHD diagnosis, noted that she often missed recurring patterns within the relationship. "A lot of the patterns I wouldn't have necessarily seen," she admitted. While she recognized instances where she disliked how she was spoken to, she also stated she responded in kind during arguments.
She described feeling worn down by constant conflict, stating, "Not only was I allowing my own self-confidence to be worn away, but the fighting was boring." Morris felt she rarely prevailed in disagreements, often finding herself "always in trouble."
This relentless cycle of arguments, she explained, left her emotionally exhausted, especially while juggling a demanding career. "Or then I'd be sent out to work again. It's exhausting," she said.
Morris also shared her frustration with how she was perceived at home after long workdays. "When I got home, [he would] sort of be like, 'Stay away from mum because she's tired and angry.' I'm like, too f***ing right I am!" she recalled.
Julia Morris and Dan Thomas announced their separation in 2022 after 16 years of marriage. The couple shares two daughters, Ruby, 20, and Sophie, 18. Morris previously described the marriage breakdown as "super sad" but expressed determination to set a positive example for her daughters, not to settle for an unhappy relationship.
"I think that's where patience starts to wear down to, 'I'm not living like this. How is this an example for my girls that this is an okay life to lead? No thanks,'" she told Australian Women's Weekly in 2023.
Morris and the British comedian married on New Year's Eve in 2005.
