Julia Fox is set to make her feature film directorial debut with "Sixth Avenue Saints," a gritty coming-of-age story she also wrote. The film will be a period piece set in 1993, exploring the pre-gentrification streets of Brooklyn and Downtown Manhattan.
"Sixth Avenue Saints" centers on Luan, a sensitive 12-year-old navigating a fractured home life in Coney Island. The narrative takes a turn when Luan is introduced to Frankie, a fearless homeless youth surviving in the downtown area. Frankie guides Luan through a hidden New York City, revealing aspects of queer street life, piers, sex workers, and other marginalized individuals.
Production is currently casting background actors to bring an authentic "Brooklyn/NYC vibe" to the film. Casting agents are seeking adults aged 35 to 79 for roles paying $20 per hour with a guaranteed minimum of $100 per day. Professional acting experience is not required for these background positions.
Fox, 36, gained prominence with her 2019 acting debut in the Safdie brothers' "Uncut Gems." Since then, she has cultivated a career encompassing acting, modeling, writing, and fashion. In 2021, she previously wrote and directed a short film titled "Fantasy Girls," which focused on sex workers in Nevada. Her memoir, "Down the Drain," was released in 2023.
Fox is a recognizable figure in New York City's downtown scene, known for her distinct fashion sense and presence. She has also appeared in films such as "One Night Only."
