Josh Radnor, who starred as Ted Mosby in the hit sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," revealed that the show's cast is "not even a little bit" close anymore. Radnor shared his current relationships with his former co-stars on a recent episode of the "Half the Picture" podcast.
Radnor explained that while he and Jason Segel, who played Marshall Eriksen, exchange texts occasionally, they haven't seen each other in a significant amount of time. He noted that he has spoken to Cobie Smulders, who portrayed Robin Scherbatsky, twice via Zoom for his rewatch podcast. He also mentioned that he has not seen Alyson Hannigan, who played Lily Aldrin, since his wedding in January 2024.
Despite the lack of current closeness, Radnor emphasized that he holds "love" for all his former castmates. He compared the cast's dynamic to that of college friends who experience an intense period together but eventually drift apart as they move on with their lives. "It's like college where you have this very intense time together and you think you’re going to be… you can’t imagine not seeing each other every day," Radnor stated. "And then it just disperses and you just go out and live your life."
Radnor, who played the lead role in the CBS series from 2005 to 2014, noted that fans often express a desire for the cast to maintain a close bond off-screen. "People really want to believe that, like, me and Neil and Jason are hitting bars in New York City together," he said.
He further elaborated on the cast's relationship, likening it more to family than close friends. "It's a little more like family than friends in that you don’t get to choose your family. We were cast. We didn’t choose each other. And family dynamics come out to play when you’re in an environment like that for so long," Radnor explained. He reiterated that while there is an "everlasting" love among the cast, it is "not an active love."
Earlier in 2024, Radnor and Neil Patrick Harris, who played Barney Stinson, discussed past on-set tensions on Radnor's "How We Made Your Mother" podcast. Harris admitted that his performance style sometimes "annoyed" Radnor. Harris recalled sensing frustration from Radnor during filming, with Harris stating, "I was looking at you like, ‘Motherf—er, I’m doing spit takes.'"
Radnor confirmed that he felt this tension at the time, attributing some of it to a potential confusion between actor and character. He also admitted to feeling insecure during the show's run due to the other cast members, including Harris, having greater fame than him at the time. "I think that I was just trying to manage a lot of different things and emotions, and they came out sideways sometimes," Radnor said.
