Actor Josh Grisetti, known for his roles in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and Broadway musicals such as "Something Rotten!" and "It Shoulda Been You," died on Friday, July 10. He was 44.

His cause of death was suicide, according to statements from several co-stars and confirmation from his agent.

"It is with a shattered heart that I share that the brilliant Josh Grisetti took his own life on Friday," wrote "Something Rotten!" co-star Rob McClure on Instagram. "I’m not ready to even attempt to understand. My heart is with his wife and family as they try to deal with the reality of this."

Actor Sierra Boggess, who starred with Grisetti in "It Shoulda Been You," echoed these sentiments, stating on Instagram, "It is with the deepest grief that I am sharing with you that our beloved friend Josh Grisetti took his own life on Friday morning."

Grisetti's agent, Rick Ferrari, also confirmed the death, telling Entertainment Weekly, "I’m absolutely devastated. That’s all I can say."

The news of Grisetti's death followed shortly after he announced he had withdrawn from directing "Legally Blonde: The Musical" for Italy’s Trentino Music Festival for "personal reasons." He shared a cast photo on Instagram from the production, writing, "Little gestures go a long way when your heart is hurting... Love this group of misfits right back!!"

Born in Washington, D.C., Grisetti grew up in Rocky Mount, Virginia. He attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and graduated from the Boston Conservatory in 2004 with a degree in musical theater.

He made his off-Broadway debut in the 2008 musical "Enter Laughing," earning a Theatre World Award for his performance and multiple nominations. Grisetti's Broadway debut occurred in the 2015 musical "It Shoulda Been You," directed by David Hyde Pierce. He later joined the cast of "Something Rotten!" in 2016, playing the role of Nigel Bottom, a part he reprised on the musical's national tour.

In recent years, Grisetti focused on arts education, working as an associate professor of theater and dance at California State University. He returned to acting in 2023 for the fifth and final season of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," playing the recurring role of Ralph.

"To be able to walk that walk and then tell students about that journey and guide them and take away the mystique is important to me," Grisetti told the Orange County Register in 2023. "A lot of acting and theater graduates are uninformed or fully lost in how the industry works and don’t do well and get overwhelmed immediately, and I don’t want that to happen to my students."

He described "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" as "one of the smartest and best-run shows on television. It has a beautiful balance of taking the work very seriously and creating incredible stuff while also remaining playful so it doesn’t feel oppressive."
