Jon Hamm, 55, is expecting his first child with wife Anna Osceola, but a 2012 interview with Us Weekly resurfaced, in which the actor expressed doubts about his parenting abilities. At the time, Hamm, then 41, was dating actress and filmmaker Jennifer Westfeldt.
In the March 2012 interview, Hamm stated, "I’d be a terrible father!" His then-girlfriend, Westfeldt, also spoke about their joint decision not to have children in a separate interview with The New York Times that same month. Westfeldt, 42 at the time, admitted she had "thought about this a lot lately" and never anticipated being at that age without kids, but added that her life had unfolded in unforeseen ways.
"I kept feeling like I’d wake up with absolute clarity, and I haven’t," Westfeldt explained regarding their choice. "And we have a pretty great life together. The chance that we’ll regret it doesn’t seem like a compelling enough reason to do it." She also noted that she might "wake up tomorrow with that lighting bolt" and have to adjust.
Hamm and Westfeldt, who met on the set of "Mad Men," ended their 18-year relationship in September 2015. They released a joint statement at the time expressing their decision to separate but to remain supportive of each other.
Sources close to Hamm have indicated that his perspective on fatherhood has shifted significantly. "Jon was in a very different mindset and a different place in his life when it came to having kids in the past," a source told Us Weekly, adding that his "perspective has changed a lot since then" and he is now in a "completely different place in life now."
Despite Westfeldt's desire for a family, the source claimed she never pressured Hamm to have children. Hamm and Osceola, who married in June 2023, are reportedly both excited and feel it is the right time for them to start a family. Hamm previously shared on The Howard Stern Show in September 2022 that Osceola "opened up the possibility of things like being married, having kids, you know, defining a new version of happiness, life, wellness."
