Johnny Depp is reportedly in discussions to reprise his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a potential sixth installment of Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that he and the studio are working on a screenplay with the actor in mind.

If a deal is finalized, the role could reportedly earn Depp more than $22.5 million, according to his agent's previous testimony. This potential payday comes after a period where Depp's career faced significant headwinds following his high-profile legal disputes with ex-wife Amber Heard. Although Depp won a defamation trial against Heard in the U.S. in 2022, the highly publicized legal battles were widely seen as damaging to his public image and career, leading to a reported decrease in his net worth.

Depp had previously expressed a strong aversion to returning to the franchise, stating he would not reprise the role even for a substantial sum and "a million alpacas." However, Bruckheimer indicated in an interview that "We're talking with Johnny, we're working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done."

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" series has been a significant commercial success, grossing over $4.5 billion at the box office worldwide since its debut in 2003. Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow was central to the franchise's appeal, with the actor having earned an estimated $300 million across the five films.

During the legal proceedings, Depp lost a libel action in the UK High Court in 2020, where he was described as a "wife beater." However, he later prevailed in a U.S. defamation lawsuit against Heard in 2022. The jury in the U.S. trial awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages, while also awarding Heard $2 million on one of her counterclaims.

Following the legal disputes, Depp's career saw a shift, with studios like Disney and Warner Bros. distancing themselves. He was asked to step down from his role as Grindelwald in the "Fantastic Beasts" film series. Despite these challenges, Depp has continued to work, appearing in independent films such as "Waiting for the Barbarians," "Jeanne du Barry," and "Modì" in 2023. He also maintained a lucrative fragrance campaign with Dior, renegotiating his contract for upwards of $20 million.

Depp has also been actively pursuing new acting roles. He is set to portray Ebenezer Scrooge in the upcoming film "Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol," directed by Ti West. Additionally, he has taken on a role in the action thriller "Day Drinker," scheduled for release in 2027.
