John Oliver was bleeped twice during a heavily censored acceptance speech after Last Week Tonight With John Oliver won Best Scripted Variety Series at the 2025 Emmy Awards.
The broadcast muted portions of Oliver’s remarks with bleeps, drawing attention to the ceremony’s live-editing choices as the show accepted one of television’s top honors. Last Week Tonight was among the evening’s winners on a night that recognized dramas, comedies, limited series and reality programs across broadcast and streaming platforms.
The Pitt won Best Drama Series, and its star Noah Wyle took home Best Actor in a Drama Series. Britt Lower was named Best Actress in a Drama Series for her work on Severance. In limited or anthology categories, Adolescence was honored as Best Limited or Anthology Series; Stephen Graham won Best Actor in that category and Cristin Milioti was named Best Actress. Winners in supporting categories included Tramell Tillman for supporting actor in a drama and Katherine LaNasa for supporting actress in a drama.
Reality and competition categories recognized The Traitors as Best Reality Competition Program, with Alan Cumming winning Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program. Queer Eye was awarded Structured Reality Program, and Love On The Spectrum won Unstructured Reality Program. SNL50: The Homecoming Concert took Outstanding Variety Special (Live), while Conan O’Brien’s Mark Twain Prize ceremony was the Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) winner.
Comedy honors were led by The Studio, which won Best Comedy Series and several other awards tied to the series. Seth Rogen won Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on The Studio, and Jean Smart received Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks. Supporting trophies in comedy went to Hannah Einbinder and Jeff Hiller, and Bryan Cranston won Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.
Writing and directing prizes were split among established and newer series. Dan Gilroy won Best Writing for a Drama Series for Andor, and Adam Randall won Best Directing for a Drama Series for Slow Horses. Philip Barantini took Best Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series for Adolescence, while Seth Rogen won Best Directing for a Comedy Series for The Studio. Best Writing for a Comedy Series went to writers on The Studio.
The ceremony also highlighted series that drew extensive nominations this year. The White Lotus led multiple acting and guest categories with 23 nominations, while The Penguin totaled 24 nominations across categories and was among the most-nominated programs. Kathy Bates, nominated for Matlock, was the oldest acting nominee at 77. Among first-time acting nominees were filmmakers Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese, who received guest-actor nods for appearances on The Studio, and Harrison Ford secured his first Emmy nomination for Shrinking.
Broadcasters and producers have increasingly sought to manage live moments and potentially profane language in real time; the bleeping of Oliver’s remarks was one of several censorship and editing choices that shaped how the ceremony was presented to television and streaming audiences. The Academy’s winners on the night reflected a mix of veterans and new voices across scripted and unscripted television, amid continued debate about live-broadcast controls and the boundaries of acceptance speeches.
