John Douglas, guitarist and singer for the Scottish band Trashcan Sinatras, has died at the age of 63. His death occurred in the early hours of Monday, August 3, 2026, following a brief illness, according to a statement released by his bandmates.

"We are devastated to inform all of you that we have lost our dear friend and brother John after a brief illness," the band shared online. "He died peacefully in the early hours of Monday the 3rd August 2026, surrounded by loved ones, his beautiful voice and songs filling the room."

Douglas, who joined Trashcan Sinatras at their formation in 1986, was featured on all seven of the band's studio albums. Their latest release, "Ever The Optimist," came out on July 31, just days before his passing, marking the group's first album in over a decade.

Reunion and Reflection

In June, the five members of Trashcan Sinatras reunited for a special one-off 40th-anniversary show at Irvine's Harbour Arts Centre. This marked the first time all members had performed together in nearly seven years. The band also filmed a music video for the new album around this time.

Douglas described the reunion in a recent interview with Spill Magazine as "very emotional" and a rare occasion for the band to be in the same room. He noted the warmth of performing with his bandmates and friends, playing songs spanning their years together. "There was a lot of treasuring every minute, looking at each other," he said, adding that he was glad the event was filmed and recorded.

He also reflected on the enduring bond within the group, attributing it to the unique connection that music fosters. "There is a real connection that music does that you don't get from anywhere else," Douglas stated. "To be part of the band doing that is a treasure and you only get it when you play."

Band History

Trashcan Sinatras, often compared to The Smiths, released their debut album "Cake" in 1990. The album spent three months on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and included their most recognized song, "Obscurity Knocks." The band's lineup includes Douglas's brother, Steven Douglas, his brother-in-law Francis Reader, and Paul Livingston.

Douglas is survived by his wife, Eddi Reader, who is known as the singer for the BRIT Award-winning folk group Fairground Attraction.
