Jodie Sweetin revealed that her friendship with "Full House" co-star John Stamos has been significantly strengthened by their shared experiences with sobriety. Sweetin, 44, stated in a July 15 interview that recovery has become a powerful bond between them.

"John and I really, really connected in a lot of ways over [sobriety]," Sweetin said on The Dory Jackson Interview podcast. She recalled a moment in 2019 when Stamos presented her with the Experience, Strength and Hope Award, recognizing her advocacy work since becoming sober.

Sweetin, who has been sober since 2011, emphasized that their friendship involves celebrating each other's milestones. "We have been there to celebrate each other’s big successes and milestones," she said, adding that she values being an "example of attraction rather than promotion," a principle in recovery that suggests personal growth should speak for itself.

She credited her recovery to a combination of 12-step programs, therapy, and gaining perspective. "It’s been such a journey — the work I did in 12-step programs, the work I did in outside programs and therapy and also just kind of growing up and, and perspective, you know, all of those things," Sweetin explained. She added that sobriety has allowed her to become a person she likes, making destructive behavior less appealing.

Stamos has also been open about his own recovery. In a 2023 interview with People, he described struggling with alcohol after a 2015 DUI arrest and subsequently entering a 30-day substance abuse treatment program. He recalled feeling deep shame during that period, telling Mayim Bialik that he "hated the way I felt, hated disappointing people, hated myself."

During the 2019 award ceremony where Stamos honored Sweetin, he acknowledged her support, stating that she "lovingly allowed me to walk my own path" and was by his side during difficult times. He described Sweetin, who had achieved sobriety earlier, as having become a "master of wisdom" when he eventually sought help.
