Despite fervent fan hopes, JJ Maybank, portrayed by Rudy Pankow, does not physically return in the fifth and final season of the Netflix series Outer Banks. The character's storyline concluded with his death at the end of Season 4.
In the Season 4 finale, JJ sacrificed himself to save Kiara, handing over the Blue Crown to Chandler Groff. Groff, driven by a past grievance, fatally stabbed JJ despite obtaining the relic. JJ died in Kiara's arms, a moment that fueled her subsequent quest for revenge against Groff and a desire to find the Blue Crown, believing it might hold the power to resurrect him.
Kiara eventually achieved her revenge in the Season 5 finale, drowning Groff during a hurricane after he had drugged and attempted to kill her. This resolution brought a close to the antagonist's arc.
While Pankow denied rumors of filming for the final season, stating he would be watching from afar, the show found a poignant way to honor the character. In the series finale, John B. and Sarah Cameron welcomed a baby boy, whom they named JJ in tribute to their late friend.
Rudy Pankow expressed his anticipation for the final season, telling the Happy Sad Confused podcast, "I want to see how they do it. I really want to. And they’re going to crush it. No doubt."
Outer Banks is currently available for streaming on Netflix, with subscription plans ranging from $7.99 to $24.99 per month.
