Jenny Han, the author and showrunner behind The Summer I Turned Pretty, left open the possibility of further stories set in the series’ world even as Season 3 concluded the show’s current run.
Although Prime Video confirmed Season 3 as the third and final season and Episode 11 — titled "At Last" — served as the on-screen conclusion, Han included a written farewell in the episode that offered fans a hint of continued possibility. The letter read in part: "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the love you’ve shown The Summer I Turned Pretty all these years. Whether you’ve been with Belly since the very first book or joined us with the show I’m so grateful you’ve made Belly’s story part of your summers. We put our whole hearts into this show and we’re so thankful to you for coming along with us on the ride. Maybe we’ll meet again one summer in Cousins. Until then — All of my love always, Jenny."
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Han expanded on that sentiment, saying she would be open to returning to the TSITP universe but only if the new material inspired her to commit fully. "It has to feel like genuine excitement for me, because showrunning is 24/7, 365 days a year… I feel I have to be there every day to make sure I can stand behind it," she said. Han emphasized that she would consider more stories in the world she created but wants the right story — one that compels her to invest the time and energy required to shepherd a project from page to screen.
Han’s remarks follow three novels and three television seasons that traced the coming-of-age story of Isabel "Belly" Conklin and her relationships against a coastal, summer setting. The television adaptation brought the books to a wider audience on Prime Video and maintained a loyal fanbase drawn to the series’ themes of youthful longing, romance and family dynamics.
Fans responded to Han’s farewell line and subsequent interview with a mixture of hope and requests for clarification, discussing possibilities such as a spin-off, an epilogue, or a film that could revisit characters or extend the narrative. Han and the series’ creative team have not announced any concrete plans for future productions related to the show; she framed any potential return as contingent on finding a story that motivates her to resume the intensive role of showrunner.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Seasons 1 through 3 remain available for streaming on Prime Video. Han’s public comments and the farewell note included in the finale keep open the prospect that the TSITP universe could reappear in another form if and when she finds a project that meets her creative criteria.
