Jennifer Lopez prompted a wave of comparisons to fellow pop star Gwen Stefani after sharing behind-the-scenes images showing her with dramatic platinum blonde hair for the upcoming film adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman.

In Instagram posts on Monday, Lopez, 56, unveiled a 1940s-inspired look for her role as Aurora — part of the double role she plays alongside Ingrid Luna in the musical thriller — wearing curled platinum locks in a chic updo, smoky eye makeup and red lipstick. She captioned the photos, "Stepping into the role of Aurora felt like dancing through the golden age of cinema … with all the glitz, glamour, and a whole lot of dancing. Stepping back into time has never been so much fun. ✨"

Many commenters said Lopez's transformation briefly made them do a double take, equating the aesthetic with the No Doubt singer known for her signature platinum hair and red lip. Fan replies included remarks such as "What in the Gwen Stefani is this?" and "I thought this was Gwen Stefani for a second lol." Singer Natasha Bedingfield also commented on the post, writing, "Omg you look like @gwenstefani Love you sis." Makeup artist Scott Barnes, who worked on the look, described it on Instagram as "a full transformation for JLo as Ingrid Luna in Kiss of the Spider Woman — and she looks breathtaking."

Kiss of the Spider Woman is adapted from the 1993 Broadway musical, which itself was based on Manuel Puig's 1976 novel. The screen version is directed by Bill Condon, based on the original music and book by the late Terrence McNally, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. Alongside Lopez, the film stars Diego Luna as Marxist Valentin Arregui and the Mexican actor Tonatiuh as Luis Molina, a gay hairdresser. In the story, Molina, serving an eight-year sentence, imagines films starring the fictional Aurora as a way to escape his imprisonment.

The project, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, has generated awards-season attention, particularly around Lopez's performances. Producers on the film include Ben Affleck and Matt Damon through their company Artists Equity.

Lopez has spoken publicly about the intensity of the film's subject matter. In a recent interview with Out magazine, she described the characters' experience of confinement and connection: "This very intense experience they have of being locked in the cell together and helping each other survive. They're able to see straight into [the] humanity in one another and fall in love. To me, that is the real definition of love." Filming on the production began in March of last year and wrapped in May; Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck in August 2024, three months after completing her scenes.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is scheduled for theatrical release on Oct. 10.
