Jennifer Garner and Timothy Olyphant, former co-stars in the 2006 romantic comedy "Catch and Release," have reunited onscreen for Peacock's new series, "The Five Star Weekend." The series, adapted from Elin Hilderbrand's 2023 novel of the same name, follows food blogger Hollis Shaw, portrayed by Garner, as she navigates grief after the death of her husband, Matthew.
Hollis invites four friends to join her for a weekend getaway in Nantucket, seeking solace and a much-needed break. However, the gathering soon unearths old tensions and secrets among the friends, complicating Hollis's vision for a peaceful weekend. The ensemble cast also features Chloë Sevigny, Regina Hall, D’Arcy Carden, and Gemma Chan.
Olyphant plays Jack, Hollis's former flame who still resides on Nantucket. His character's presence introduces palpable sexual tension as Hollis grapples with her loss. Showrunner Bekah Brunstetter noted that Garner specifically wanted to work with actors she had prior familiarity with, leading to the casting of Hamilton and Olyphant, with whom she had previously collaborated.
According to Brunstetter, Olyphant was drawn to the script and invested in playing the love interest role, described as a smaller part that still significantly impacts the narrative alongside the female leads. She also praised his on-screen presence, noting his ability to evoke a sense of romantic longing. "He steps on screen and you’re just like, ‘oh Tim,’ and it just gives you butterflies and reminds you of all the boys you’ve ever had crushes on," Brunstetter said.
The series also features Josh Hamilton as Matthew Shaw, Hollis's late husband, whose death sets the plot in motion. The show will explore the complexities of their marriage as more details emerge. Other cast members include D'Arcy Carden as Brooke, a friend of Hollis through their children; Gemma Chan as Gigi, a social media connection who raises suspicions among Hollis's friends; and Harlow Jane as Caroline "Goose" Shaw, Hollis and Matthew's college-aged daughter.
Also in the cast are David Denman as Kyle, Tatum's devoted husband; West Duchovny as Aubrey, Tatum and Kyle's daughter; and Judy Greer as Electra, a fellow school parent who creates friction between Hollis and Brooke. The series is currently streaming on Peacock.
