Jenna Fischer, widely recognized for her role as Pam Beesly in the hit series "The Office," has spoken about the significant challenges of starring in television shows, describing the experience as "really hard" due to demanding work hours.

Fischer, who later took on a lead role in the sitcom "Splitting Up Together," found the intensive schedule incompatible with her desire for quality family time. She revealed on the podcast "Dinner's On Me With Jesse Tyler Ferguson" that the hours were often "65, 70 hours a week," which was particularly difficult as her children were very young.

"I just decided after that that being the lead of a television show or even a regular on a television show was not gonna be a fit for me anymore," Fischer stated.

The cancellation of "Splitting Up Together" in 2019, after two seasons, proved to be a pivotal moment for Fischer. It allowed her to shift her career path towards opportunities that offered a better work-life balance. She subsequently co-hosted the podcast "Office Ladies" with her former "The Office" co-star Angela Kinsey.

Fischer said she worked 70-hour long weeks on the series Splitting Up Together

"So when that show was cancelled, that's when I pivoted into podcasting with Angela," Fischer explained. "And that afforded me a lifestyle with both a steady income and also I was now at every school drop-off, every school pickup, every teacher conference, every concert. I didn’t have to beg someone to go to the Halloween parade."

She described this new flexibility as being "the agent of my own time, the architect of my own time," which she found greatly beneficial. Her children, who were young when this career shift occurred, came to associate her primarily with her podcasting work, often referring to her as a "podcaster."

"The Office," which aired on NBC for nine seasons from 2005 to 2013, was based on the British series of the same name. The American adaptation starred Steve Carell as the regional manager of a paper company branch in Scranton, Pennsylvania, with Fischer, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, and others playing its employees.

In addition to her career changes, Fischer announced in October 2024 that she was cancer-free after being diagnosed with Stage 1 Triple Positive breast cancer in 2023. She shared that the cancer had been aggressive but treatable, and after undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, she had completed treatment.
