Fox premiered Celebrity Weakest Link on Monday with Jane Lynch as host and a first-episode “Glee Homecoming” that reunited former cast members for a celebrity charity edition of the trivia format.
The show keeps the rules of the recent NBC revival: nine contestants answer trivia questions in turn to climb a money tree that starts with a $25,000 maximum in the opening round and can reach $500,000 in the final round. Players may "bank" accrued amounts to protect them from a wrong answer; the money banked carries over to subsequent rounds. After each round the contestants vote to eliminate one player, and the final two take turns answering five questions, with the contestant who answers more correctly claiming the pot for charity.
The premiere’s lineup included Max Adler, Becca Tobin, Alex Newell, Chord Overstreet, Heather Morris, Amber Riley, Dot-Marie Jones and Jenna Ushkowitz. Lynch opened the episode in a red jogging suit reminiscent of her Glee character Sue Sylvester and staged several comic bits, including a staged coffee toss at a production assistant. Many of Lynch’s barbs in the episode were scripted and leaned into the Glee reunion, though she also improvised sharper jabs when contestants gave mistaken answers.
Producers and critics noted a tonal shift from the more combative feel of the original British series and the early American iterations. Whereas Anne Robinson’s original run was known for cutting insults and tension among contestants playing for substantial personal prize money, Celebrity Weakest Link’s contestants compete for charities, which softens reactions to eliminations and reduces onstage anger. That dynamic prompted at least one reviewer to conclude the format works well in a celebrity-charity context even if the stakes are lower.
The episode included several playful callbacks to Glee: eliminated contestants were instructed to make an “L” for loser symbol on their foreheads, and Lynch delivered one of the show’s sharper scripted digs when she told some cast members, “Some of us used the show as a springboard to stardom; the rest of you are here tonight.” Amber Riley drew attention during the episode for her quick recall and strategic vote; at one point she voted to eliminate Alex Newell in a round prompted by a Tony-award quip.
Producers have announced additional themed episodes for the season, including a TV Moms installment that will feature Jackee Harry, Monica Potter, Caroline Rhea and Bellamy Young, and a Celebrity Couples episode that will include Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag. The series follows a civilian Weakest Link revival that aired on NBC from 2020 to 2024 and the earlier U.S. runs in the early 2000s.
Content in the premiere was family-friendly overall; reviewers noted no explicit material, though one exchange prompted a parent-focused caveat about a question that might require context for younger viewers.
In a review for Decider, critic Joel Keller recommended streaming the series, saying the celebrity edition’s friendlier tone and Lynch’s mix of scripted and improvised jabs make it entertaining in a different register than prior versions. Lynch closed the episode with a quip aimed at a classic rock sentiment: "Despite what Journey says, you can stop believing."
