Jake Reiner, 35, made his first public appearance on a red carpet in over six months on Tuesday, attending the Los Angeles premiere of "Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness" at the Hollywood Legion Theater. This event marks his first public outing since the fatal stabbing of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, in their Brentwood home on December 14.
His younger brother, Nick Reiner, 32, was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the double murder. Nick Reiner has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges. Jake Reiner has described the loss of his parents as "a living nightmare" that is "too devastating to comprehend."
Jake Reiner, a director and producer, shared on Instagram that he would be appearing in the debut of "Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness," a project associated with his late father's confidante, Larry David. He was seen on the red carpet wearing a black suit with a grey sweater and black shoes.
Meanwhile, Nick Reiner is pursuing funds from a trust established by his parents. In a petition filed on June 9 in Los Angeles County court, his civil attorneys stated that trustees have denied him access to money from individual trusts set up for him and his siblings. The petition argues that Nick Reiner is entitled to these funds to support his defense against the murder charges and cover basic necessities while in jail. The trust is reported to have at least $1.5 million in assets.
Nick Reiner's legal team has asserted his innocence, with his former attorney Alan Jackson stating that "pursuant to the laws of California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder." The petition also noted that Jake and their sister Romy Reiner had initially agreed to fund Jackson's representation but later reversed that decision. Nick Reiner's trust documents reportedly stipulated that he was to receive half its money at age 30 and the remainder at 35.
Rob Reiner was a renowned director known for films such as "This is Spinal Tap," "Stand By Me," "A Few Good Men," and "When Harry Met Sally…" He met Michele Singer, a photographer, during the production of the latter film, and they were married for 36 years.
Proceedings in Nick Reiner's murder case are ongoing. He is scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing in September. The District Attorney's office has not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.
