The latest film featuring actor Jacob Elordi, Ridley Scott's "The Dog Stars," has experienced a significant box office disappointment since its August 27 release, prompting renewed discussion of the so-called "Kardashian curse."
The film, with a reported budget exceeding $100 million, earned only $623,000 on its opening weekend in Australia. This figure falls considerably short of other releases, including "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" which grossed $3 million and "The Odyssey" with $2.24 million. The opening weekend performance was also less than a tenth of Elordi's February release, "Wuthering Heights," which garnered $6 million in Australia.
Globally, "The Dog Stars" has grossed approximately $45 million, a stark contrast to other films Elordi has been associated with this year, such as one co-starring Margot Robbie which earned $333 million worldwide. The film's limited theatrical screenings in Australia further diminish its prospects for a late comeback.
Critics have also been largely unfavorable, with "The Dog Stars" debuting on Rotten Tomatoes with a 38% rating. Reviews have described the film as derivative, tedious, and a "misbegotten beast."
"The Dog Stars," set in a post-flu pandemic world, follows a former pilot, played by Elordi, who leaves his safe zone in search of a better life. The ensemble cast includes Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Allison Janney.
The film's performance marks a notable shift for Elordi, who has recently starred in critically acclaimed projects such as "Saltburn" and "Priscilla," as well as the television series "Euphoria." His previous films, including "Frankenstein" and "Wuthering Heights," were also considered commercial successes.
The rumors of a "Kardashian curse" are an internet meme suggesting that a celebrity's career declines after becoming romantically involved with a member of the Kardashian-Jenner family. Elordi's relationship with Kendall Jenner became public in April, following their appearance at a Coachella afterparty. The couple has since been seen together in various locations, including Hawaii, Japan, and London for the premiere of "The Dog Stars."
