Jaclyn Smith, the acclaimed actress known for her role as Kelly Garrett in "Charlie's Angels," has revealed details from her first marriage in her new memoir, "I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie." Smith, 80, claims in the book that her then-husband, actor Roger Davis, 87, had an affair with their real estate agent.
Smith and Davis were married from 1968 to 1975. The actress told People magazine that she initially believed they were "a match made in heaven," sharing common interests in architecture, acting, and Southern heritage. However, she later discovered the extent of Davis's infidelity.
According to the memoir, the revelation came after Smith ran into actor Warren Beatty while on her way to view an apartment she and Davis were considering renting. Shortly after this encounter, Davis appeared and reportedly told Beatty that Smith "only does commercials." Later, the real estate agent, named Laura, informed Smith that her own husband had propositioned her and, upon refusal, revealed Davis's affair with her. Laura herself confirmed the infidelity to Smith.
"I couldn't imagine how two people I trusted could have betrayed me, and for so long," Smith wrote in her book. Laura reportedly told Smith that Davis had been upstairs with her having an affair on the very day Smith had encountered Warren Beatty outside the apartment.
Davis, however, denied the affair, attributing Laura's claims to jealousy. Smith described the moment of discovery as the point at which she knew the relationship was irreparably damaged, noting that "When the paint starts to peel, get out, because it doesn't change."
Despite the painful realization, Smith admitted to living in denial for a period, finding it easier to maintain a "blind belief" than to confront the truth. She ultimately chose to stay in the marriage longer, though it eventually ended in divorce years later. Smith has since been married to her husband, Brad Allen, for over 28 years.
