ITV will air a one-hour documentary, Downton Abbey Celebrates The Grand Finale, on Sept. 12 to mark the end of the Downton Abbey franchise and the 15th anniversary of the series. The special coincides with the theatrical release of the third and final film, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.
The programme features conversations with cast and key production members who reunited at London’s Savoy Hotel to reflect on the series’ 15-year run and the making of the concluding motion picture. Appearing in the documentary are principal actors Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Laura Carmichael, Raquel Cassidy, Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt and Elizabeth McGovern, among others. Behind-the-scenes contributors include production designer Donal Woods, costume designer Anna Mary Scott Robbins and composer John Lunn.
Set in 1930, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale continues the story of the Crawley family nearly two decades after the television series debuted. The film addresses the aftermath of the Wall Street Crash and centers on Lady Mary’s divorce, which raises questions about her eligibility to inherit the Downton estate. The family and household are depicted grappling with financial strain and the threat of social disgrace as a new generation prepares to lead the estate forward.
The film also pays tribute to Dame Maggie Smith’s character, the Dowager Countess of Grantham. Dame Maggie, who had been a key presence since the series began, died in September 2024; The Grand Finale is the first Downton project produced after her death.
The original television series aired on ITV from 2010 to 2015 and won multiple BAFTA awards. It returned to cinemas with a feature film in 2019, followed by a sequel, Downton Abbey: A New Era, in 2022. The new documentary and final film conclude a 15-year run that expanded the show from television to a global film franchise.
The Savoy reunion featured cast members sharing memories and previously untold stories from production. The documentary is billed as an hour-long retrospective that includes on-set recollections and contributions from designers and the composer who helped shape the series’ distinctive period look and sound.
At the London premiere for The Grand Finale last week, Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary Crawley, announced she is expecting a child and appeared on the red carpet showing a visible pregnancy. Dockery married producer Jasper Waller-Bridge in 2023. Earlier in her life, she was engaged to publicist John Dineen, who died in 2015 after a battle with cancer.
ITV has scheduled Downton Abbey Celebrates The Grand Finale to air on Sept. 12, the same day Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale opens in cinemas, offering fans a retrospective look at the series and its cast and crew as the franchise closes.
