ITV will screen a one-hour documentary, Downton Abbey Celebrates The Grand Finale, on September 12 to coincide with the release of the final Downton Abbey film, the broadcaster confirmed.

The programme brings together principal cast and key creatives to mark 15 years of the franchise and to reflect on the making of the three feature films and original television series. The special, described by ITV as a celebration of the series’ end, features conversation and recollections filmed at London’s Savoy Hotel and includes personal memories and previously untold anecdotes from actors and behind-the-scenes staff.

Appearances in the documentary include Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy and Michelle Dockery, along with Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt and Elizabeth McGovern. Production designer Donal Woods, costume designer Anna Mary Scott Robbins and composer John Lunn also take part, offering perspective on sets, wardrobe and the series’ score.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the third and reportedly final feature film in the franchise, is set in 1930 and follows the Crawley family as they confront the economic and social fallout from the Wall Street Crash. The film explores a public scandal surrounding Lady Mary and a consequential question over her eligibility to inherit the Downton estate, while the household faces financial strain and the family wrestles with change as a new generation steps forward.

The film pays tribute to the late Dame Maggie Smith and marks the first Downton production made after her death, which was noted by cast members during recent press activity. The documentary segments are reported to touch on that absence and on the franchise’s evolution since the first television broadcast.

Downton Abbey began as a BAFTA-winning television series on ITV from 2010 to 2015. The story returned to cinemas with Downton Abbey (2019) and its sequel, Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022), before this concluding instalment.

The Savoy reunion was recorded in the run-up to the film’s London premiere, where Michelle Dockery, who reprises the role of Lady Mary Crawley, revealed her pregnancy on the red carpet. Dockery, who married producer Jasper Waller-Bridge in 2023, was shown at the Leicester Square premiere wearing a fitted black gown that drew attention to her baby bump. The documentary is expected to include reflections from cast members on both the public milestones and personal moments tied to the series.

ITV’s one-hour special will air on the same day the film opens in cinemas, offering viewers a mix of on-camera interviews and behind-the-scenes insight intended to mark the close of a 15-year chapter for the franchise.

The programme and the film continue a longstanding partnership between the original series’ creative team and ITV, which first broadcast Lord and Lady Grantham’s story in 2010 and has overseen its transition to the big screen since 2019.
