A four‑year mystery over a stranger who appeared in photos from a Scottish wedding has been solved after a social media user helped identify the man as an attendee who had gone to the wrong venue.

Michelle and John Wylie were married on 20 November 2021 at the Carlton Hotel in Prestwick. They only noticed the unfamiliar face in their wedding photographs when the images were returned by the photographer and began asking family, friends and venue staff who the man might be. None could provide an answer, and the couple later posted the photo on Facebook to find out more.

The mystery remained unsolved until a content creator, known online as Dazza, shared the picture and asked followers to help identify the man. He was soon traced to Andrew Hillhouse of Troon, who told BBC Scotland News that he had arrived at the Carlton Hotel by mistake while late for a different wedding two miles away.

Hillhouse said he had been given the wrong address by his partner, David, and with only minutes to spare had pulled up at the venue he had been told to attend. He sat down just before the ceremony began and only realised the error when the bride started to walk down the aisle. "I assumed David was in another room with the bride so the music starts up, everyone turns around to look at the bride and the second I see her I'm like 'oh no, that's not Michaela, what's going on here?'," Hillhouse said.

He said he felt he could not walk out of a wedding already in progress and tried to make himself inconspicuous by hunching down in his seat. At the end of the ceremony, as guests were being gathered for a group photograph, he attempted to leave but ended up visible in the back row of the official shots. Hillhouse said he had a cola during the interlude and then phoned his partner, who told him the correct venue was the Great Western Hotel in Ayr. He then travelled to the wedding he had been meant to attend and arrived with a new anecdote for that day's celebrations.

Michelle Wylie said the unresolved question of the stranger's identity had "niggled" at her for years. "It wasn't until I got the first few photos back from the photographer and me and my husband were looking at them that we went 'who's that?'," she said. She and her relatives had considered several theories, from a guest who had arrived with the registrar to a friend of the photographer, and even briefly wondered whether the stranger might be a stalker.

Hillhouse's response to the social media appeal drew more than 600 comments and tens of thousands of reactions. The exchange led to Hillhouse and Michelle becoming Facebook friends; they have since met in person and shared a laugh about the long-lasting curiosity his presence provoked.

The case underscores how a single photograph can prompt wide public interest in the internet age and how online communities can help resolve small local mysteries. For the Wylies, the discovery brought a lighthearted conclusion to an odd thread from their wedding day four years earlier.
