Hang Hang, a lion celebrated for his unique mane that drew comparisons to a mullet hairstyle, has died at the age of 17. Guangzhou Zoo, located in China's Guangdong province, announced his peaceful passing on July 14.
Hang Hang gained international attention in 2022 when images of his distinctive mane went viral online. Zoo officials attributed the unusual look to the high humidity in the region, which caused his fur to frizz. They also noted that the lion's grooming habits, including licking his paws and brushing his mane, contributed to the straightened appearance, reminiscent of 1990s styles.
The lion's unique hairstyle attracted a surge of visitors to Guangzhou Zoo, eager to see him in person. Despite zookeepers denying any deliberate styling, some visitors expressed skepticism, with one noting in 2022 that his hairstyle appeared different from previous sightings and calling it "so silly."
Born in Hangzhou in 2009, Hang Hang was later transferred to Guangzhou Zoo. African lions typically live between 10 to 14 years in the wild, but can survive longer in managed zoo environments with proper care.
In tribute to the beloved animal, a bronze statue of Hang Hang is being commissioned, according to the Global Times. The zoo remembered Hang Hang as being "gentle in nature," recalling that he "enjoyed basking in the sunshine and playing in the rain, leaving visitors with many warm memories."
