The series finale of the Apple TV+ adaptation of Cape Fear culminates in a brutal confrontation between Tom and Max, a sequence deliberately staged in the family's backyard pool rather than the open waters of the Cape Fear River.
Showrunner Nick Antosca explained that for this iteration of the story, the decision was made to "bring the storm to them," concluding the narrative within the characters' home. This shift from previous film adaptations emphasizes the invasion of domestic tranquility by external threats.
Actor Patrick Wilson, who plays Tom, described the finale as a "kill-or-be-killed sort of moment." The scene depicts Anna (Amy Adams) stabbing Max with a kitchen knife, after which Tom shoves him into the pool. Max then grapples with Tom in the water, and Anna joins them, holding Max underwater until he stops struggling.
The pool setting also carries thematic weight. Javier Bardem, who portrays Max, noted that it harks back to a detail from Episode 7 where Max revealed he was baptized in the Cape Fear River as a boy but never learned to swim. Bardem stated, "The pool is also the place where he’s more vulnerable."
The underwater fight sequence required days of shooting under simulated rain, with cameras capturing the action submerged. Wilson highlighted the precision needed for water-based stunts, comparing it to a dance that requires performers to be "so in tune with your dance partner." He also described the scene as a cathartic release after months of restrained performances. "We all had been so measured for so long… it was nice to let it rip," Wilson said.
Despite the violence, the scene is framed as a desperate act of self-defense. Wilson emphasized that for Tom, the killing was not motivated by revenge. "Tom, at his core, is not someone that would kill out of revenge," he stated, suggesting the climax tested the characters' survival instincts rather than their capacity for vengeance. The series explores the idea that "there’s a killer inside of everybody."
