IKEA has teamed up with Swedish designer Gustaf Westman for the first time to create a 12-piece holiday collection for hosts, led by a novelty dish built specifically to cradle the home store’s flagship Swedish meatballs. The full collection will be available in IKEA stores on Oct. 1 and online on Oct. 3 as part of the winter holiday line, VINTERFINT.

The centerpiece is a trough-shaped plate about 12 inches long, designed to hold roughly a dozen meatballs and line them up so each is visible. Westman said he relishes designing objects for a specific function because it injects humor and makes use intuitive. “I love designing objects for a specific function — it brings a touch of humor and makes them instantly easy to grasp,” he said.

The designer has embraced the silliness of the idea, noting the plate is “so mean the meatballs had to share a plate before.” While created with meatballs in mind, the dish is advertised as versatile enough for olives, cheese, fruits and sweets as part of a broader entertaining set. IKEA notes that the plate can hold up to about 12 meatballs and is meant to make a visually tidy table, with each bite presented on a little throne, in Westman’s words.

For its part, IKEA says the collaboration aligns with a long-running, playful tradition around its iconic meatballs. The retailer has served meatballs for 40 years, moving beyond the original beef version to include plant-based, chicken and salmon options as part of a broader meal offering. In Sweden, meatballs carry holiday associations, and Westman described the plate as his way of honoring that Christmas tradition while keeping the design straightforward and accessible.

Reaction online has ranged from amusement to fascination. Social media users greeted the dish with humor and disbelief. One Instagram commenter wrote, “What the hell is this? I need one,” to which Westman replied, “Exactly how I want people to react to my stuff.” Others described it as “pointless and perfect” or suggested many alternative uses, from sushi rolls to dips and beyond. The discourse reflected IKEA’s broader appeal: a product that questions utility while delivering a memorable, shareable moment.

The meatball plate is part of a broader winter collection that reflects IKEA’s evolving approach to entertaining at home. By pairing a high-visibility centerpiece with a versatile set of accessories, the company aims to tempt shoppers looking for both whimsy and function during the holiday season. Westman’s design philosophy—prioritizing a clear function with a humorous twist—echoes a trend in contemporary Scandinavian design that values approachable, accessible objects that spark conversation as much as use.

Overall, the collaboration marks a notable blend of fashioning everyday dining gear around a cultural touchstone. Meatballs remain a central feature of IKEA’s culinary identity, and the trough plate is positioned as a playful homage to Christmas dining in Sweden while offering a versatile tool for serving and presentation throughout the holiday period.
