A distinctive Mr Blobby costume, recognized for its external appearances and stunt work, has sold for £8,500 at auction. The sale on Monday attracted bids from around the world for the costume of the 'iconic' television character, according to auctioneers.

The outfit sold was specifically used for work outside of television studios and for stunt performances, distinguishing it from other original costumes reserved for indoor filming. This particular costume also featured prominently on Mr Blobby VHS home video releases.

Auctioneer Giles Stowe expressed his surprise at the level of interest. "We were blown away by the interest in this sale," Stowe said. "People love nostalgia. Imagine walking in to someone's home and seeing Mr Blobby in the corner. It's the ultimate talking point."

He added that discovering and selling such pieces of pop culture history is a pleasure, noting the variety of items he handles in his job. "In my job, one day it's fine art and sparkling jewellery; the next, it's Mr Blobby."

Mr Blobby, the chaotic, bright pink and yellow-spotted character, first appeared on the television show "Noel's House Party" and subsequently became a national phenomenon, dubbed "Blobby-mania." The character was also the centerpiece of the Blobbyland theme park in Somerset and achieved a UK Christmas Number One spot in 1993 with his self-titled single, "Mr Blobby."

The costume was originally owned by the late Mickey Wills, who was the former head of entertainment at Blobbyland and also performed daily shows at the theme park.
