Iconic film and television memorabilia, including items from "The Shining," "Jurassic Park," and "Saturday Night Fever," will be up for auction in Los Angeles.
Propstore's Summer Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction, scheduled for August 26-29, will feature over 1,400 film and television lots, alongside more than 300 lots of autographs and sports memorabilia. The event will take place at the Peterson Automotive Museum.
Among the notable items for sale are Jack Nicholson's stunt axe from "The Shining," estimated to fetch $100,000, and the mosquito fossilized in amber from "Jurassic Park," with a projected price of $200,000. John Travolta's iconic white suit from "Saturday Night Fever" is expected to command $400,000. Other featured props include Ken Kirzinger's Jason Voorhees hockey mask from "Freddy vs. Jason" and the scissorhands used by Johnny Depp in "Edward Scissorhands."
One of the most valuable pieces is a 15-inch stop-motion animation puppet from the 1949 film "Mighty Joe Young," believed to be the only fully intact puppet surviving from the landmark production. It carries an estimated price of $1 million to $3 million, with a starting bid of $500,000.
An exclusive preview event for select items will be held in West Hollywood from July 30 to August 2. This event offers a chance to view collectibles from a wide range of films, including "Castaway," "Harry Potter," "Back to the Future," various Marvel movies, "300," "The Fifth Element," and "Batman," as well as items from the original "Star Trek" television series.
Propstore COO Brandon Alinger noted that in the 1970s, such artifacts were not widely regarded as cultural treasures needing preservation. "It’s amazing that these things have survived to be appreciated," he told LA Magazine.
Alinger also commented on the collector base for these items, suggesting that while there's enduring interest in figures like Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe, the current auction appeals to a different group. "It’s a different collector base," he said, "[these are] those who developed an attachment to the movies and TV shows of the last 50 years."
In-person bidding will occur on the first day of the auction at the museum, with online, telephone, and absentee bidding available for the remaining days. Registration and further details are available through Propstore.
