Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative commentator, died Wednesday after being shot while speaking onstage at Utah Valley University, officials and witnesses said, prompting an outpouring of reactions from Hollywood figures and public personalities.

The shooting occurred during the kickoff of Kirk’s American Comeback Tour as he responded to a question from an audience member about mass shootings committed by transgender people, according to multiple accounts. Kirk was struck in the neck by a single bullet and later died. FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X that a ‘‘suspect’’ connected to the ‘‘horrific shooting’’ has been taken into custody; authorities have not released further details on motive or the suspect’s identity.

Hollywood actors, media figures and public personalities reacted quickly on social media, offering condolences and framing the attack in broader terms of political violence, gun violence and mental-health concerns. Chris Pratt wrote on X, ‘‘Praying for Charlie Kirk right now, for his wife and young children, for our country. We need God’s grace. God help us.’’

Former "The View" host Meghan McCain wrote on X that Kirk’s death would not silence conservative voices. ‘‘Rest in peace Charlie Kirk. The mark you have made on the world will forever be a blessing and memory,’’ she posted, offering prayers for his wife, Erika, and their children. In a follow-up message she said attempts to intimidate or silence conservatives would fail.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy wrote on X that the shooting should not be treated as a partisan issue. ‘‘RIP Charlie Kirk. It doesn’t matter what your opinion is of Charlie or his politics if you don’t view this as one of the darkest days in American history than you are part of the problem,’’ he wrote.

Several public figures used the attack to underline concerns about mental health and gun violence. Former race driver Danica Patrick wrote on Instagram Stories, ‘‘What is wrong with people? We have an epidemic of mental illness. Praying so much for his family and everyone [who] knows him and loves him.’’ Jake Paul wrote on X that Kirk ‘‘got shot for telling the truth’’ and called the moment ‘‘a mentally sick time we are living through.’’ Author Stephen King described the shooting as ‘‘another example of American gun violence’’ on X.

Piers Morgan called the attack ‘‘an appalling assault on free speech and democracy,’’ and former NFL star Brett Favre said he was ‘‘at a loss for words’’ and asked for prayers for Kirk and his family. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, ‘‘The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,’’ and extended sympathies to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their children.

Kirk, who had a wife and two young children—a daughter, 3, and a son, about 1—was known for outspoken and polarizing political commentary. News outlets reported he was married to Miss Arizona USA Erika Frantzve.

Officials have not released a full timeline of the investigation, and law enforcement has provided limited public details about the suspect or any potential motive. The case is expected to be handled by local and federal authorities given the campus location and the public profile of the victim.

The shooting has reignited conversations in public life about the safety of political speech and public events, as well as wider debates over gun violence and mental-health services. Public figures across the political spectrum responded with statements emphasizing grief and calls for unity, while some commentators focused on drawing attention to broader social issues.

An official investigation remains underway, and authorities said they will release additional details as they are confirmed.
