Being fired from a prominent television role can be a significant setback for an actor's career. For Hilary Swank, however, her 1998 dismissal from the popular series Beverly Hills, 90210 proved to be a career-defining event, ultimately leading to her first Academy Award win.
Swank, now 51, played Carly Reynolds for 16 episodes during the show's eighth season. She described the experience of being let go as "devastating," especially as the series had seen a decline in viewership following the departure of actor Luke Perry. "I was on 90210 in the eighth season when no one watched it anymore, and Luke Perry was long gone," Swank recalled in a 2014 interview with Conan O'Brien. "So I was fired off the show at that point. I'm thinking, no one watches this show anymore, and I got fired off of a show that no one watches."
Despite her initial disappointment, Swank viewed the setback as a "silver lining." "It's always such a reminder, when something bad happens, there's something else that could be looming around the corner," she said.
Just two months after her departure from 90210, Swank landed her breakthrough role in the independent film Boys Don't Cry. Her performance in the 1999 drama earned her widespread critical acclaim and her first Oscar for Best Actress at the age of 25.
In Beverly Hills, 90210, Swank portrayed a single mother working at the Peach Pit diner and served as a love interest for Ian Ziering's character, Steve Sanders. The actress, who has since won a second Academy Award for Million Dollar Baby, has spoken about her challenging beginnings in Hollywood. She and her mother lived out of their car in Los Angeles before finding more stable housing and enduring further struggles as she pursued her acting aspirations.
Swank's journey began in Bellingham, Washington, where her family lived in a trailer park, a period that shaped her perspective. "In LA, my mother and I first lived in her Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme on quiet residential streets," she previously shared. "When we weren't sleeping in the car, we stayed at the house of a new friend my age whose family had just moved out and were trying to sell their home. We slept on an air mattress."
Early in her career, Swank secured guest roles in television and her first major film break in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992). She later starred in The Next Karate Kid (1994) before her Oscar-winning role in Boys Don't Cry.
Despite her significant success, Swank has taken breaks from her acting career, including a three-year hiatus to care for her father after his lung transplant. She has also become more selective about her roles in recent years to prioritize her personal life and family. In 2023, at the age of 48, Swank welcomed twins, Aya and Ohm, with her husband Philip Schneider.
Tori Spelling, who starred as Donna Martin on Beverly Hills, 90210, recently recounted Swank's emotional reaction to being fired. "She was left 'hysterically crying' upon her firing from Beverly Hills, 90210," Spelling said on the 90210MG podcast. Spelling described herself as Swank's "safe place on set" and recalled Swank coming to her dressing room in tears after a meeting with producer Paul Waigner. "She was like, 'Oh my God—if I get fired off of 90210, I'm never gonna make it,'" Spelling recalled, noting that she was unsure of the exact wording but conveyed Swank's panic.
