Hilary Duff announced she has signed with Atlantic Records and is working on a docuseries chronicling her return to music, revealing new details of a project that has generated widespread fan excitement.
The 37-year-old actress and singer posted three candid studio photos on Instagram on Tuesday showing her recording with husband Matthew Koma, 38, who is a singer-songwriter and record producer. In the caption Duff wrote, "new music ... or something," accompanied by a disco-ball, sparkles and cherries emoji. A release date for new music and a premiere date for the docuseries have not been announced.
Variety obtained a press release that said the series will follow Duff as she balances "raising a family, recording new music, live show rehearsals, and preparing to perform on stage for the first time in over a decade." The docuseries will be directed and executive produced by Sam Wrench, whose credits include the 2024 holiday special A Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter and the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Duff released her last full studio album, Breathe In. Breathe Out., in 2015 and her most recent music release was a 2020 cover of Third Eye Blind’s "Never Let You Go" alongside RAC and Koma. Since stepping back from recording, she has concentrated on acting, with roles on television series including Younger and How I Met Your Father. A planned reboot of her breakthrough 2001 sitcom Lizzie McGuire was shelved during production and did not make it to its scheduled Disney+ premiere in 2020.
In late August, Duff marked the 22nd anniversary of her debut album Metamorphosis by posting throwback photos and reflecting on the period that launched her pop career. She wrote that the era was a "huge change" in her life and noted how the album "set me off on a pretty epic adventure." The post closed with "To be continued...," prompting renewed speculation among fans about a musical comeback.
Duff is mother to son Luca Cruz, 13, from her marriage to former NHL player Mike Comrie, and shares daughters Banks Violet, 6, Mae James, 4, and Townes Meadow, 1, with Koma. The couple married in late 2019.
Fans and fellow artists responded quickly to Duff’s announcement on social platforms. Comments beneath her Instagram post ranged from celebratory messages and quoted lyrics to personal recollections of listening to her earlier work. Notable figures including Nicole Richie, Mandy Moore, Julia Michaels and Ashlee Simpson left supportive remarks.
Representatives for Duff and Atlantic Records did not immediately provide additional details about the timeline for new music or the docuseries. The press release and Duff’s social posts make clear the series will document both the creative process and her family life, but specifics on collaborators, song releases and broadcast or streaming partners remain under wraps.
As interest builds, Duff’s return highlights a familiar pattern among entertainers who move between acting and music careers. Her forthcoming projects will be watched closely by longtime fans who have followed her since her Disney Channel beginnings and by observers tracking mainstream pop comebacks from artists who rose to prominence in the early 2000s.
